Tell us about your newest project. What was the inspiration behind it and where can we check it out?
My newest single “Reciprocation” is inspired by my own life and how even the most perfect relationships with your favorite people need more than just love- they need mutual effort and respect! It’s a sassy, playful reminder that doing your share isn’t optional—it’s necessary and expected, and if you aren’t you will be called out for it.
How would you describe your music?
My music ends up on a lot of playlists with artists like Kelly Clarkson, Dua Lipa, Raye, Demi Lovato, Sabrina Carpenter and Meghan Trainer.
How did you get started?
I got started in music professionally in my late teens when I moved to NYC to study music at NYU and tour with Big Time Rush and other Nickelodeon artists, but I always sang in church choirs and in a cappella groups and school choruses when I was a kid so I really feel like I’ve always been singing, there was no start.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Some of my biggest influences are Aretha Franklin (she’s the first artist I ever fell in love with, and her influence is all over “Reciprocation”, my most Aretha-coded track to date) and Carole King. Also, from that era I love The Supremes, Vandellas and the Ronettes. I also love modern soul pop artists like Amy Winehouse, Raye, Kelly Clarkson (hello Love So Soft and The Trouble with Love Is) and Duffy. Taylor Swift & Sabrina Carpenter & Julia Michaels inspire me a lot lyrically especially when writing songs about relationships. Lana Del Rey / Marina especially in her Electra Heart era definitely helped inspire the whole “retro housewife popstar” aesthetic of Domesticated EP Era with their coquette-meets-camp storytelling. I am also inspired by my husband he has an amazing work ethic and has really taught me to not limit myself or my artistry.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
The rigid beauty standards. The emphasis on youth as a commodity. The constant being told to be spending more time and money on social media promoting your art than actually creating it.
What sets you apart from other artists in your genre?
Well to start I don’t confine myself to genre. My sound blends pop, rock, R&B, electronic and alt-soul. I am just as inspired by music from the 1960’s as I am from the last 60 days. I aim to create a timelessness in my songwriting and melodies so if all the production is taken away and I am just performing acoustic or a capella, I will still have have hooks that stick, lyrics that feel real, and vocal delivery that’s technically impressive and smooth but also emotionally raw enough that it would hit in any era.
What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
I have always felt very connected to music and growing up felt I leaned most on music to get through tough times. Understanding that it was possible to make music that touched others in the way that music touched me was what made me passionate about sharing it, but I’ve always been passionate about consuming it and creating it innately.
What’s next for you?
After Reciprocation I have another single coming off the “Domesticated” EP before it drops in the late autumn. The next single is called “Don’t Stop” and it is a true pop record.
What are your career goals in the next five years?
My career goals are to keep making music that is honest and truthful to me and where I’m at and to just keep doing what I’m doing and getting my music in TV and film and ads and as the soundtrack to people’s lives. I would love to go on a tour and even better if it’s an all female tour- I’ve never toured where the headline act wasn’t male!
