Landon Wall played a show at the Basement Friday night, and I had to come out to support. I’ve known Landon since he was just twelve years old. At 21, he’s grown a lot musically and personally. I’m used to seeing him at his regular gig at Margaritaville playing covers, so I was looking forward to hearing some originals.
A long-time buddy, Carson Mac opened the show. I’ve seen Carson a few times playing in rounds, but it was nothing compared to Friday. I did not realize he could play guitar like that. Mac played riff after riff seamlessly. His originals were fun, upbeat, and catchy. Next time I order McDonald’s I’ll be hearing the “ba da ba da da I’m loving it” in my head. He thanked Wall for his continuous support throughout the years and encouraging him to move to Nashville.
Landon came out with his band (drummer and bassist) and kicked things up a notch, playing an hour set of mostly all originals. He played a few tunes I was already familiar with including “Play It Country” “Lost This Town” and “Honestly Don’t Even Know”. He also did a few I hadn’t heard before and debuted a brand-new song.
Stories were shared of songs, North Carolina, his fiancée’ and more. He told us he got his first guitar at age 6 for Christmas after seeing the Justin Bieber documentary and deciding he wanted to be just like him. He gave credit to his parents Angela and Ken, who have been supporting his dream ever since. Whether it be the 7-hour trek back and forth from Trinity, North Carolina countless times through the years, front row cheering at almost every show, running sound and filming, and so much more.
After what was supposed to be his last song, the crowd was chanting for another. So, he pulled up CJ Solar, the songwriter behind Morgan Wallen’s “Up Down” to join him on that very tune. It was a great night supporting independent music. And another solid performance from Landon Wall, who always puts on a good show.
