Juna N Joey Interview!

We caught up with the country music duo, Juna N Joey at CRS. This is the 6th year at CRS and the two feel like they are finally learning the ropes, working on their craft. Originally from West Palm Beach Florida, the brother and sister pair are currently enrolled at Berklee studying songwriting. “It’s great that we can work together and be next to each other all the time” says Joey.

Starting out when they were just young kids, they had a classic rock band. Country music came later, a love passed down from their grandparents. One of them was a country singer, the other an opera singer. Joey jokes “It skipped a generation. Our parents don’t sing and now we are. It’s wild”

They have been touring all over the UK and Florida for the past year. Juna and Joey did a school tour in the UK to promote their anti-bullying song “Anchor. The band’s first tour was with Gabby Barrett’s husband Cade Foehner. This year they already have a few shows booked in Florida. As residents at a local venue in Florida they enjoy coming back to play regularly. They have sponsorship with Gone Touch, a company that designs jewelry that enable you and your partner to send messages to each other.

The duo is working on a brand-new EP. They recorded 8 songs in Studio A right here in Nashville. The plan is to continuously release a new song every 2-3 weeks. The first song off the EP “So Long, Long Distance” went to country radio last month. “It’s about how long-distance can be so hard. To be away from that person you spend every day with. It kind of makes up your other half. Although it might sound sad, it’s actually a happy song because it’s about that feeling when you get to see them again for that first time after being gone for so long” explains Juna.

Another song “Fall in Love and Find Out” dropped in February, with a music video to be shot in the summer. “We always love music videos because it gives a different spin on it. You can see the video which gives you a better clue of what the song is about” laments Joey.

The duo wrote the song with a few friends and called it a play on words. “I feel like that is something that everyone finds themself saying that at some point in their lives. They just want to be reckless and do things that they don’t know what’s going to come out of it. That’s kind of what love is you know you go into it and you don’t know what’s going to come out of it. You don’t know if you guys are going to hate each other in the end or be their perfect match” confides Juna.

Their inspiration depends on the vibe. Sometimes they will bring co-writers in, sometimes it’s just the two of them. “It’s kind of cool to be able to think of ideas. When you have more people, you have different ideas” says Joey. “We’re able to come from a woman’s perspective and a man’s perspective into one song. Kind of have those battling each other or helping each other depending on what the story may be” Juna adds. They also confess they like to “steal” phrases from their parents and management and put them into songs.

The siblings are looking forward to the Key West songwriter’s festival. “It’s such an experience” says Juna. “Everyone is so relaxed in flip flops chilling by the pool telling stories. Most of the songs are hit songs. It’s really cool to hear the backstory, meet with people” adds Joey. “It’s a really chill environment. Everyone is just hanging out. They don’t care what they are wearing or how many Tequilas they’ve had” remarks Juna. “Honestly by the end of the songwriter festival nobody can talk because it’s so hot and everybody’s singing” concludes Joey. Sounds like one heck of a party.
