Please introduce yourself:
Asanzuri! I am the World’s First Princess Pop Star with a mission to Make The World Smile! I wear a tiara and princess clothes every day, along with living my life like it’s a fantasy book! I work 80+ hours a week, constantly “DeVoeting” myself to my career and my music. I’m always happy: I want to make people around me feel my confetti-like joy. I also have peach hair, which is my favorite color of all time!
I’ve earned 130+ weeks charting on radio station Top 20 charts in London, Toronto, New York City, and more in my first 2 years, along with playing on 500+ radio stations in 120+ countries! I am the mixer, lyricist, recording engineer, and my own manager!
My dream is to be the ambassador of smiles to the world. I want to create global change with my music and career, connecting people all over the globe no matter the language!
Tell us about your newest project. What was the inspiration behind it and where can we check it out?
My most recent release was my single “Guilty Night Guilty Kiss {English Ver.}” released on New Year’s Day! I was inspired by the “kaigai” idol community, along with Japanese idols/anime. This song was kind of an homage to the days where I performed at conventions in a cosplay dance group, which sparked a stronger fire for becoming a pop star. I was also inspired by the galaxy and the “navy and gold” aesthetic, which shaped a lot of the visuals for this release. This is truly my biggest “princess pop star” song, it’s quite stadium-like. The energy is indescribable, so go check it out for yourself! You can stream this song on any platform, as well as watch the lyric/music video I made/animated on my YouTube “Maeve De Voe”!
How would you describe your music?
My original music is still a secret treasure. My originals are “regal electropop”, bringing elements of royalty and more 2007-2015 style electropop beats. You could compare it to Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Calvin Harris, Selena Gomez, Ke$ha, La Roux, David Guetta, Perfume, Vocaloid, and K-Pop {IZ*ONE}.
How did you get started?
I started choir when I was 9 years old in school. I immediately fell in love with it, which set me on a life-long forever path of music. I did musical theatre for 6 years after that, and that has inspired my career and my music to its core. My singing style combines theatre technique with pop, creating a unique combo of vocals depending on the song. I started making my own original music in 2013, playing on a keyboard writing down simple note combos and coming up with song lyrics every day. I knew I wanted to be a pop star, I always have since I was around 4 or 5, so I decided in fall 2015 to start dedicating my efforts towards that. I wrote and produced my first full song “I’m Different”, which years later was released in July 2021 as my first single. I attended The University of Miami Frost School of Music for the summer in 2016, and there I learned how to produce on Logic Pro X. Ever since, I’ve been teaching myself daily, along with mixing skills. In 2018, I started my first semester of college at 16 years old, enrolling at 15, and became a music major. I’d study music theory, vocal technique, and classical singing. In 2020, I left college and became full-time for my music career. I worked for a full year creating originals, developing my brand, and working in the background until 2021 when I debuted in July. In May 2022, I decided to dedicate my every hour of every day to my career, and since then, I’ve become the world’s first princess pop star!
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Perfume is my biggest one right now. I am absolutely infatuated with how Yasutaka Nakata produces, it hits my soul differently than other music. I mix my vocals similarly to theirs, and some of my originals have a “perfume” vibe. I always say their song “Perfect Star Perfect Style” is my life anthem/theme song. I am heavily influenced by Lady Gaga because she was such a huge part of my childhood. You can really hear it in my songs “Zhoosh It Up!” and “Paparazzi {Moto Blanco Remix}” where I even harmonize with Gaga herself in some parts. The music I listened to growing up in the early 2000s really shaped who I am as an artist, so I hold those songs dear to my heart.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
I work to be a role model to girls encouraging more modesty, showing them that modest clothes can be super cute! I think that we need more artists considering the fact that children are such a big consumer of mainstream music. Right now, it’s heavily saturated with adult content. I’ve seen artists say they don’t need to care about if the kids see it because that’s “not their problem it’s the parents”, but I disagree. I wish the general mainstream radio was cleaner, not just “bleeping”, but cleaner topics as well. Young girls idolize these singers, and I feel as though no one cares about what happens based on their actions anymore. You can have mature songs, performances, etc., but they should stay out of mainstream/trending.
What sets you apart from other artists in your genre?
I’m a princess pop star with peach hair and a tiara 24/7! As mentioned earlier, I combine classical, theatre, and pop singing techniques all in one. I also release incredible covers, often changing them in the slightest way to be more “me”. I can sing like a Disney princess, or I can sing like a superstar, you choose! Sometimes, I’ll switch back and forth between a deeper powerful voice and a softer feminine voice in one song: I’m a wild card. My vocal range is 4 octaves, I can sing in any genre, and I can sing in 12 languages! Not only that, but I also have a kingdom and a flag {The Maeveland Flag}! I’ve also created my own language “Maevenese” that I speak to my fans in {“Asanzuri” means hello}. I created an entire universe for my fans to dive into, with incredible aesthetics, fashion, lore, and more. I want to become someone’s escape: my music/world is another universe. I put my entire soul and heart into every word I sing, and I always sing with a smile, having fun while I record.
What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
My last name is “De Voe”, which is funny how it’s short for “devotion”. I was created for this one purpose. There isn’t another life path or a 2nd option. Every fiber of my being is on fire for music and being the princess pop star I was born to be. I work 80+ hours a week, 12+ hours a day: this is my full-time job. “Passion” doesn’t describe myself well enough, so I created a language that could. Music is intertwined with my veins, it’s my every hour, and nothing could ever break or loosen that bond.
What’s next for you?
This year is peach-packed with releases: it’ll be the most releases I’ve ever done! I’m releasing 2 songs in February, a very special massive drop in March, a song in April, MY BEST SONG EVER in June, massive 60 PEOPLE group collab song in August, also in August dropping my first original in a few years, a song in October, and another massive group collab in December! I’ll also be releasing “Peach Pops” on my YouTube channel, which are short 1 minute covers of songs only released on that platform. Keep up with my career on my socials, linked on my website!
What are your career goals in the next five years?
Officially making the whole world smile. My plans are extraordinary, but I’ll leave that up to God.
