Please introduce yourself
Hi! My name is Ella Mckenzie! I live in Caroline County, VA and I am 15 years old.
Tell us about your newest project. What was the inspiration behind it and where can we check it out?
When Erin McCaffery and I wrote “Baby How Do I Say Goodbye,” it was just about a breakup. But now, it’s become much more than that to me. I never imagined I’d find the courage to share my own music. Yet, in creating this song, I’ve evolved so much and learned the importance of letting go of what held me back. In the song, it’s about a relationship, but for me, it was the relationship I had with myself. I hope the song can inspire others facing similar challenges to say goodbye to what they think they can’t get past and move forward without restraint!

How would you describe your music? (artists with similar sound)
I would say that for this song an artist with a similar sound would be like a lot of Taylor Swift’s older stuff. A lot of her more country/pop-sounding songs, more like Speak Now!
How did you get started?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, but started taking vocal lessons a little over 4 years ago. I was always super-anxious and it helped me be able to find my voice. Then, over the last year, I started to turn emotions into songs, and learned how to play the piano and guitar, record music, and have been performing!
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Lewis Capaldi, Adele, Pink, Jewel, Idina Menzel, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jelly Roll, Kelsea Ballerini, Rascal Flatts, Leanne Womack, Trisha Yearwood, Shania Twain.
Do you have any other influences (teacher/family/etc.)?
Multiple people have supported my music career but the person who has shown me the greatest support is my mom. She has helped support and guide me through all of it, has helped me so much with my anxiety and fears, and gives me the confidence to be able to do anything!
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
I would change the way women are objectified and constantly compared to an unfair standard. This doesn’t only apply to the music industry but as a whole. We are all unique and I think it’s important for girls to have someone they can relate to that they can look up to.
What sets you apart from other artists in your genre?
I believe what sets me apart from other artists is my authenticity. I want to represent my age and my phase in life because sometimes it’s not about growing up, but it’s also about living in the moment where we are today and now and the journey to get there. I am looking to really relate to people and grow with them through life and music.
What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
I am passionate about music as it allows me to feel and express emotions that I would otherwise hide or conceal, especially when I am feeling anxious or afraid. When I sing, I am able to express those feelings through the lyrics which provides for a safe place mentally and emotionally.
What’s next for you?
I don’t know exactly what is next on this musical journey but I know I’ll be writing and releasing more music and will see how others like and respond to it!
What are your career goals in the next five years?
I really want to be a recording artist and one day be able to go on tour and travel the world!
