|CARMEN JUSTICE GOES
We talked with former 1 Girl Nation member
Carmen Justice the other day about her
solo project. Her debut single "Flaming
Arrows" comes out this Friday and Carmen
is totally stoked for everyone to hear it!
When asked how being in a group compares
to being a solo artist Carmen shares
"I loved being in the group. Part of being
a solo artist is saying in my songs what
I've wanted to say for years." She
excitedly adds "I'm writing a brand new
book and there is fresh pages to write
Justice describes her sound in three
words: empowering, dark, and pop. She says
the past few years had a lot of struggles.
"I walked through a season of uncertainty
where I didn't know what my career was
going to look like." However, Carmen has
taken inspiration from it and is coming
out on the other end.
She encourages everyone to follow
their dreams. "I think we can all find
something we are passionate about and
doing good for the world, and can be our
complete selves." For Carmen Justice
writing has always been that outlet to
express herself. "Even writing a
song about something opens up a
conversation, makes them feel less alone."
One of her proudest moments has been just
recently, getting ready to release her
debut single. "This past week has been
very encouraging, feeling like I've been
able to have a voice." She is proud that
people will finally be able to see the
In this industry it can be extremely tough
for artists to be authentic and show
themselves. "When your young you can buy
into what people tell you. Your real
easily swayed because your trying to make
it. Once you realize that you can be
yourself and you can inspire others to be
themselves, that's the most powerful
moment because then you can learn to say
no." She believes in following her heart
and staying true to herself and her music.
Carmen doesn't define success as any
material accomplishment. Rather she says
"Success is when you learn to have joy and
be happy and confident in who you are."
When asked what keeps her going through
the tough times, she tells us her husband
has been her biggest supporter. Carmen
also relies on her faith for inspiration.
She grew up singing in church as a little
kid, and went on to lead worship at a
local Nashville church. Carmen also tudied
music at Belmont, but left to join 1 Girl
Plans for 2017 include putting releasing
an EP later this year and touring. She
says her biggest goal is to get back out
on the road and play shows. Carmen
couldn't be more excited for the next
"Now it's time to enter into a new season.
My whole musical journey has led me to
this point and it's very exciting that I
don't know what the future holds and being
OK with that."
We wish her all the best on her journey!
